Synopsis:

The Watchmaker’s Daughter is a faith-centered stage musical based on the true story of Corrie ten Boom, her sister Betsie, and their family, who sheltered Jewish neighbors during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

Told through family conversations, wartime encounters, and music, the story begins in the ten Booms’ Haarlem watch shop—a place where their father has taught his daughters to welcome anyone in need. As the occupation grows more dangerous, Corrie and Betsie open their home to people seeking refuge. Their decision draws them into a network of secrecy and resistance, while testing what it means to love their neighbors at great personal cost.

The first act follows the family’s life at the Beje as its familiar rooms become a hiding place. When the ten Booms are arrested, the second act follows Corrie and Betsie through imprisonment and Ravensbrück concentration camp. There, amid grief and cruelty, the sisters struggle to hold fast to the faith that shaped their lives at home.

Betsie’s compassion gives Corrie a difficult vision for what must come after the war: helping wounded people heal, including those who have been shaped by hatred. Corrie’s journey does not end with her return to Haarlem. She must decide whether she can carry Betsie’s message into the world and learn to love even those who caused them harm.

With substantial roles for women and men, opportunities for a larger cast, and a story that moves from warmth and humor to suffering and hope, The Watchmaker’s Daughter offers churches, Christian schools, and theater programs a thoughtful way to engage questions of courage, God’s presence in suffering, and the costly work of forgiveness.
